Ciara Mageean forced to withdraw from 1500m Final at European Indoor Champs in Belgrade

04 March 2017

Local hero and European Athletics Championship 1500m (outdoor) medallist Ciara Mageean’s (Coach: Jerry Kiernan) European Athletics Championships Indoor campaign ended in disappointment as the Portaferry woman was unfortunately forced to withdraw from the 1500m final (Saturday 4th March 2017) through injury.

After booking her place in the final with a 4:12.81 finish for 4th place in yesterday’s semi-final, Ciara started the final well, positioning herself well early on and establishing a good mid-pack towards the latter stages.  However, the UCD AC athlete then stepped off the track with two laps remaining.

Ciara was visibly upset during a post-race interview, and explained “I felt like I was losing power in my right Achilles, I just wanted to get off and get back to my physio.”  The local running community will hope that it’s nothing serious for one of our top athletes.

Great Britain & NI’s Laura Muir lived up to her pre-race favourite status with an excellent display of front running for gold.  Laura clocked a new British record of 4:02.39 for 1st place.
