Finn ONeill Irish under 23 Indoor Heptathlon Record

Finn O’Neill began the second year of his US collegiate career at San Antonia University of Texas with a record-breaking performance at the beginning of December, setting an amazing six new personal bests beating Daniel Ryan’s Irish U23 record with a tremendous score of 5261.

This score now ranks him 2nd in the NI all-time list, and 4th in the Irish all-time list. He finished second at the Silver State Invitational and Combined Events in Reno Nevada to Estonian teammate Janre Jogi.

Finn continues to perform at the highest level having been ranked No.1 in the UK as an UN13/Un15 and Un17 athlete in Combined events, winning numerous English and Irish Championship titles both Indoors and outdoors and qualifying for the European Un18’s in Israel.

Following knee surgery this time last year Finn has recovered and is now back competing at international level under collegiate Coach Aaron Fox a former USA Decathlete.

Finn’s father Shane O’Neill who is his greatest supporter, along with wife Samantha, puts his success down to the NI and Ulster Club Coaches support Team who coached, encouraged and developed him into a well-rounded all-rounder, able to take on the challenge of learning the skills of 10 events. Lead Coach Wendy Phillips realised the need to bring in other expert coaches if Finn was to develop his full potential, including renowned Pole Vault Coach Jim Alexander, Damien Crawford former Irish International Javelin thrower and expert throws Coach, who has worked with Lifford and Strabane coaches including Sharon Gallen and Barry McArdle, ad Michael Curran, whilst Scott Paulin provided excellent Strength and Conditioning coaching. Shane says “It was a winning team of coaches who worked together, and special thanks goes to Lady Mary Peters and her Trust who awarded Finn financial support. We are all looking forward to the outdoor season and achieving the standard for the Commonwealth Games as one of our main goals.

Finn’s marks were 60m 7.29 (PB), Long Jump 6.72m (PB) Shot Put 13.62m (PB & 1st Place), High Jump 1.88m (PB), 60m Hurdles 8.52 (PB) Pole Vault 4.15m 1000m 2:45.28.
