Four Selected for the European Indoor Championships

Four NI athletes have been selected to represent Ireland at the European Indoor Championships next month in Glasgow as part of a 16-strong team.

Ciara Mageean (UCD/Team New Balance / Steve Vernon), an experienced athlete at this level with 4th place and the bronze medal at the previous two European Outdoor Championships, will be competing in the 1500m, having qualified for both the 1500m and the 3000m. Ciara is currently 5th in the European Indoor lists with her Irish record of 4.06.76 set in Athlone last week.

The team also includes two athletes ranked in the top 10 on the European U20 lists. Commonwealth Youth High Jump Champion and record holder, Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley AC / Niall Wilkinson) will be competing for the first time in the Senior High Jump competition. Sommer achieved the extremely tough standard of 1.90m in July 2018 when winning the silver medal in the World Junior Championships in Finland and has shown good form indoors winning the AAI title with a Championship Record on Saturday with 1.86m.

Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn AC / Adam McMullen), who recently moved from the Youth Academy into the Commonwealth Potential Programme, will make her European Senior debut as an individual in the 60m sprints following an extremely consistent indoor season. Lauren set her PB of 7.39 when winning the AAI Games this month before making the final of the British Indoor Championships.

Also making their debut in the Men’s 800m will be Conall Kirk (Annadale Striders / Mark Kirk) who has taken over 2.5 seconds off his PB in the past year. Conall recently returned from the Athletics NI Endurance Camp in Murcia and has been in excellent form winning the AAI Games as well as breaking the 1.49 barrier in Athlone last week.
