Northern Ireland fielded two teams at the annual Home Nations 5k Championships which were held in Bute Park Cardiff on Saturday evening. Conditions on the night were less than ideal with heavy rain and strong winds persisting throughout the duration of the event. Nonetheless, there were some outstanding performances from our NI and Ulster teams.

The women were first up and were greeted by a very heavy shower of rain just as the race got under way. Roise Roberts (CNDR) was first NI and Ulster athlete home finishing twelfth in 16.29 which was a road pb for her. Hot on her heals was Kirsti Foster (Willowfield) who finished fourteenth in 16.31. Emer McKee (CNDR) running her first senior international acquitted herself very well finishing thirty third overall and first U17. Catherine O’Connor (East Down) was one place behind in thirty fourth place and first V40. The team finished fifth overall.

In the men’s race Tony McCambridge (CNDR) had a breakthrough performance finishing an excellent third in a very high-class field in 13.56 which was a road pb for him. Conall McClean (CNDR) also had an excellent run equalling his road 5k pb to finish fourth in 14.00. Andrew Milligan (NBH) finished eighteenth in 14.20 with Chris Fielding (NBH) thirty seventh in 14.44. As a result the team finished a magnificent third overall maintaining their excellent track record of podium finishes at Home Nation Championships.
