John Kelly Throws New Shot Put Record in Portugal

Finn Valley AC’s John Kelly gained a new NI & Ulster, Donegal and Club record in the Shot Put, by beating the current record not once, but three times at the International Throwing Meet in Leiria, Portugal.

Kelly’s first throw at the Portuguese meet was a PB of 18.34m which he followed by a throw of 18.37m, increasing his PB and record.

He had recently won silver at the Irish Life Health National Senior Championships only a weekend previous with a throw of 17.60m and first broke the 18.00m barrier in Sweden, throwing 18.01m.

His third throw of the day was an astonishing 18.50m, which beats the current Northern Ireland Senior record by an incredible 0.71m and took him into 4th place in the competition.
