Live Lab Testing with Dr Richard McCann and Olympian Ciara Mageean

Endurance coaches will get a rare insight into the use of applied physiology with an elite athlete when Dr Richard McCann presents his breakout option at this Saturday’s Athletics NI Coaching Conference with European Medalist Ciara Mageean.

The Athletics Captain at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and her coach, Steve Vernon, will be looking to the expertise of SINI physiologist Dr. McCann to establish various physiological markers and associated training paces, by way of a submaximal treadmill test, in the lead up to an upcoming altitude camp this autumn.

Athletics NI Director of Coaching and Athlete Development, Jackie Newton said “In the lead up to Gold Coast 2018, Richard joined our Athletics NI Commonwealth Games Preparation Camp for endurance athletes, in Murcia, and made a significant difference to some of our top level middle and long distance runners."

"He will talk through his approach to supporting athletes on camps and at competitions, present data and explanation from lab and training profiles and talk about the importance of coach and physiologist working together to understand the findings. The combination of Richard’s experience in working with elite coaches and athletes and having one of our home grown medalists in the lab will make this an extremely interesting and informative conference breakout session. I would recommend that any endurance coach who has aspirations to work with athletes to Commonwealth level or beyond doesn’t miss this exciting opportunity.”
