Mags Mathieson Awarded MBE for Services to Athletics

Margaret Mathieson MBE

The athletics community across Northern Ireland and beyond is celebrating the news that Margaret “Mags” Mathieson has been awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours for her outstanding and sustained contribution to the sport.

A Pillar of Athletics in Northern Ireland

Mags Mathieson is recognised as one of the most dedicated and consistent volunteers in athletics. A familiar and reassuring presence at events for decades, Mags has played an essential role in the smooth delivery of many competitions across Northern Ireland.

Her name is associated with fairness, professionalism, and quiet leadership. In all conditions—rain, wind, or sunshine—Mags has been on the course, helping to ensure events run to standard, often arriving well before the athletes and staying long after the final finisher.

A Lifelong Volunteer

Mags has devoted countless hours to athletics in a voluntary capacity. She has brought energy, discipline, and integrity to every role. Her work spans local club fixtures, county championships, and national events—always delivered with care and a clear love for the sport.

Often working quietly in the background, Mags has been central to event operations—from setting up and dismantling courses to organising official rosters and ensuring athlete safety. Her broad experience and deep commitment have made her a go-to figure for event organisers, fellow officials, and club volunteers.

A Humble Servant of the Sport

This honour is particularly fitting given Mags’ modesty and focus on service. Her dedication is driven by a deep love for athletics and a strong sense of giving back. Whether it's coordinating volunteers, supporting club events, or helping prepare cross country venues at first light, Mags has done it all with professionalism and grace.

Her MBE reflects not only a personal milestone, but the immense value of volunteering in sport. It acknowledges the unseen hours and effort that go into making events happen—not just on the field, but behind the scenes.

Celebrating a True Role Model

Mags Mathieson’s recognition is a source of pride for Athletics Northern Ireland and the wider athletics family. It is a richly deserved honour for someone who has supported the sport through every season and challenge.

"Mags embodies the very best of our sport—selfless, steady, and utterly committed to helping others succeed," said Declan Leung, Development Manager at Athletics Northern Ireland. "Her contribution has shaped events, clubs, and volunteers across the country for years, and this award is a fitting tribute to her impact. She’s inspired countless people, including myself, and we are so proud to see her recognised in this way.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Mags and thank her for her remarkable service, commitment, and unwavering support over so many years.
