McCann and Flanagan Head to Glasgow for World Indoor Championships

Two local athletes will be representing Ireland at the World Indoor Championships at the Emirates Arena, Glasgow.

At 8.15pm in the evening session on day 2 (Sat 2nd March) Roisin Flanagan (Finn Valley AC, Coach: Damon Martin) will compete in a highly competitive women’s 3,000m final. Flanagan, who has been based in USA for a number of years now, recently set an Irish record over 2 Miles (9:36.70) when competing at the Millrose Games on February 11th in New York. Roisin has had previous major championship experience over 5000m in 2022 when finishing 11th at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games and 14th a fortnight later at the European Championships in Munich and she will be targeting a top 12 finish at these championships.

Rachel McCann (North Down AC / Coach: Michael Roberts) was not a surprise selection for these championships considering her excellent form in 2024. The QUB athlete who has graduated from the Athletics NI Youth Academy in recent years has bettered her previous personal best five times this year, taking the Irish University title in a record performance of 54.45 and securing the silver medal at the recent British University Championships.

The Irish Women’s 4x400m relay team has had considerable major championship success major championships in recent years and there are high hopes for Rachel and the team of Sharlene Mawdsley, Sophie Becker Phil Healy, Roisin Harrison, and Lauren Cadden. The heats take place at 11.38am on Sunday morning and final is set for 8.30pm on the same day.
