NI & Ulster Senior Championships 2024 Review

The NI & Ulster Senior Championships saw both warm weather and incredible performances over the weekend.
Friday evening started off with the Flahavan’s 1000m Girls race, where Saidhbhin McMillan took first place, followed by Sheena McMullan and Lucia McMullan in second and third. In the Flahavan’s 1000m Boys race, Harry McVeigh continued his winning streak, having previously claimed victory in the Flahavan’s Primary School Cross Country League Final earlier this year. Liam McElhone and Cahir Mullin finished in second and third, respectively. Conal McCaughey (North Belfast Harriers) secured his third consecutive win in the NI & Ulster Senior 10,000m Championships.
Day 2 of the championships saw Sarah Leahy (Killarney Valley AC) triumph in the Women’s 100m with a personal best (PB) of 11.54, while T13 Paralympian Orla Comerford (Raheny Shamrock AC) ran 12.07 ahead of the Paris Paralympics. In the Men’s 100m, the Fastest Man in Ireland, Israel Olatunde (Tallaght AC) came up to the Mary Peters Track for the NI & Ulster Senior Championships, after competing at the Belfast Irish Milers Meet earlier this year. Israel’s post race interview can be found here, were he mentioned his favourite moments of the Paris Olympics. Callum Baird (Ballymena & Antrim AC), typically a 400m competitor, switched to the 100m and claimed third place with a PB of 10.77. In his post race interview, found here, Callum mentioned his experience at the European Athletics Championships competing for Ireland in the Men’s 4x400m.
In the Men’s 400m, Louis Albrow (North Down AC) won with a PB of 49.12, followed by Eoin Kelly (Letterkenny AC) in second with a season's best (SB) of 49.55, and Luke Russell (Dromore AC) in third with a PB of 50.10. Joseph Gillespie (Finn Valley AC) secured victory in the Men’s Triple Jump with a SB of 14.00m, while Karl Martin (North Down AC) took third with a PB of 13.24m. Charlie Lawden (North Down AC) won the Men’s Javelin with a SB of 53.21m, and Freddy Young (Speed Development Project) came third with a SB of 46.25m.
Jenna Breen (City of Lisburn AC) won the Women’s 200m with a SB of 24.62, closely followed by Michelle Duggan, who achieved a PB of 24.65. John Dwyer (Templemore AC) claimed victory with a season's best of 51.99m, while Connor Breslin (Finn Valley AC) took second with a PB of 43.13m. Harvey King (Omagh Harriers) won the Men’s Long Jump with a PB of 6.78m, with Alan Kennedy (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow AC) in second with a SB of 6.53m, and Joshua Knox (City of Lisburn AC) in third with a SB of 6.45m.
Other notable PB performances include Rhianna McCarthy (UCD AC), who placed second in the Women’s Long Jump with 5.64m, and Michelle Duggan, who secured third in the Women’s 400m with 55.92. Ronan Bloomer (Mid Ulster AC) finished second in the Men’s 110m Hurdles with a time of 17.82.
Additionally, some SB performances include Adrienne Gallen (Lifford Strabane AC) threw 34.55m for second place in the Women’s Discus, while Caoimhe Gallen (Lifford Strabane AC) placed second in the Women’s Shot Put with a throw of 11.01m. Peter Fry (City of Derry AC) took second in the Men’s High Jump, clearing 1.65m, and Anna McCauley (City of Lisburn AC) threw 35.34m in the Women’s Javelin. Naralie McCrory (City of Lisburn AC) finished second in the Women’s Triple Jump with a leap of 10.89m.
