NI Athletes Among Irish team on Eve of European U20 Championships

The European U20 Championships begin in Tampere, Finland on Thursday 8th August and one of the first NI athletes up could join the likes of Kate O’Connor and Nick Griggs as former medalists at these championships.
Conor Kelly (Finn Valley / Paul Miller) has set several records in the past year since winning a bronze medal at the European U18 Championships in 2024. He runs in heat 4 on Thursday morning at 10.14 NI time and goes into the event ranked number one this year and will be hoping to comfortably advance to Friday’s semifinals and Saturday’s final. Conor is also named in the 4x400m relay which is scheduled for the weekend.
Frank Buchanan (St. Michael’s Enniskillen / Mark Kirk) will take on the 1500m at midday on Friday 8th August and will look to build on his championship experience gained at the Trinidad Youth Commonwealth Games in 2023.
Last up of the NI athletes will be last month’s EYOF Medallist 100m Ben Sykes (Orangegrove AC / Gillian Sykes) who will be part of a strong Irish 4x100m team who will be looking to advance through the semifinals on the evening of Saturday 9th August with the final the following day.
