NI and Ulster Athletes Gain 81 Medals at Irish Schools Championships

Athletes: Joshua Knox, Jonathan Cochrane, Jai Benson and Anna McKinty

The NI & Ulster Schools Athletes picked up a total of 81 medals across 122 events at the Irish Schools Track and Field Championships on Saturday 1st June in Tullamore, where Aaron Sexton produced two record-breaking performances.

Aaron won two gold medals in the Senior Boys 100m and 200m in new record times of 10.43 (+1.9) and 20.69 (+1.4). Aaron is now the top European U20 for the 200m distance. He will compete at the European U20 Athletics Championships in Boras, Sweden before playing professional rugby with Ulster.

There were many intriguing doubles including Finn O’Neill (Limavady Grammar) winning the Minor Boys’ 800m and 75m hurdles in new Championship Records of 2:05.32 and 11.19 seconds. Cullybackey College's Ross Stevenson also claimed two gold medals in the Junior Boys 100m and 200m, finishing in a time of 11.54 and 23.39 respectively.

Commonwealth Games athlete Kate O'Connor was also in top form with a Championship Best in the Senior Girls Javelin of 48.17 metres which is close to her new NI Senior record of 49.31 metres. The Dundalk St Gerard’s AC girl also won the High Jump with 1.65 metres.

Irish International Davicia Patterson (Hunterhouse) took a classy victory in the Senior Girls’ 400m in a new championship best of 53.35. Rachel McCann (Sullivan Upper) took 2nd place in a time of 56.73 and she was also 2nd in the Senior Girls 200m in a time of 24.93.

Adrienne Gallen (St Columba's Stranorlar) won the Junior Girls’ Hammer in a new record of 57.24m and took 2nd in the Shot Put with a throw of 11.75, while Beth Hammond (Glenlola Collegiate Bangor) took 3rd place throwing 11.66.

Grosvenor Grammar’s Jenna Breen came 1st in the Inter Girls 300m in 39.48 and 2nd in the 100m in 12.22.

Youth Academy athlete, Joshua Knox (Belfast High School) was 2nd in the Inter Boys Triple Jump in 13.24 (w/s 0.9). He also came 2nd in the Inter Boys High Jump with a jump of 1.80, just behind Craigavon Senior High’s Daniel Scott who cleared 1.85. Tom Poulter (Slemish Int Ballymena) took 3rd place with 1.80.

Casey Mulvey (St Clare's Ballyjamesduff) won the Inter Girls Shot Put with a throw of 15.35m and she then went to to claim 2nd place in the Discus, throwing 33.64, just behind Hazelwood College's Megan Lenihan in 1st place who threw 34.75m.

Troy McConville (SERC Newtownards) came 2nd in the Senior Boys 110mH in 15.75, with Ethan Williamson (Portadown College) in 3rd place in 19.04. Troy then went on to claim bronze in the Pole Vault, clearing 4.00m.

Anna McCauley (Methodist College) won the Senior Girls 100mH in 14.61 with Eimear Kelly (St Cecilia’s Derry) in 2nd place in 14.72. Anna went on to pick up a Bronze medal in the High Jump, clearing 1.65m.

Other NI Senior wins included Adam Hughes (Regent House) in the 400m in 48.91. Jai Benson (St Malachys) won the triple jump in a PB of 14.41m and was also 2nd in the Long Jump with 6.93m. Methodist CB's Erin Fisher took the Senior Girls Pole Vault with 3.30m, while Anna Reibeling (Abbey VS Donegal) came 3rd with a jump of 2.50.

In the Inter Girls 800m victory went to Wallace High School's Victoria Lightbody who ran 2:10.20sec. In the Junior Girls Triple Jump Sophie Hoey (Strathearn Belfast) won gold with a jump of 10.36 (w/s 2.2).
