NI and Ulster Championship for Waterside Half Marathon

Athletics Northern Ireland are pleased to confirm that the Waterside Half Marathon will be this year’s NI & Ulster Championship Half Marathon. The race will be held on Sunday 2nd September 2018, which is organised by City of Derry Spartans AC and the Derry City and Strabane District Council.

The Championship has been reallocated following the cancelation of the Ards Half Marathon.

The event attracts a large number of people to the city every year, with numbers set to increase again this year. Aisling McCallion, the Festival and Events Officer for Derry City and Strabane District Council has stated:

“We are delighted that this year’s Waterside Half Marathon will have the added prestige of hosting the NI & Ulster Half Marathon 2018 Championships.

“The event has grown in popularity in recent years with the redesigned route showcasing our parks, greenways and bridges and taking in both sides of the Foyle proving a hit with runners.

“We are looking forward to welcoming some of the cream of Northern Irish athletics to the city on September 2nd, who will join what we expect to be another record entry for the event.”

The race director Gerry Lynch said he was "delighted to once again to host the championship at the Waterside Half Marathon and is looking forward to welcoming all the runners to the Maiden City for a magnificent event on a runner and spectator friendly course. See you all on 2nd September.”

The event will mark the 37th year of the Waterside Half Marathon, starting in Ebrington Square. The route will once again take runners across the river to the cityside, before finishing at St Columb’s Park.
