North Down AC Superstar Shows True Spirit of Athletics at Boston Marathon
23 April 2026

North Down AC’s Aaron Beggs demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship at this year’s Boston Marathon, coming to the aid of a fellow competitor in a moment that has captured global attention.
With the finish line in sight and on course for a personal best, Beggs noticed Ajay Haridasse (a student from Wakefield, Massachusetts) in distress just 200 metres from the end of Monday’s race. Haridasse had been stumbling and was struggling to get back to his feet, his race all but over.
Recognising the severity of the situation, Beggs stopped to help. Attempting to lift the 21-year-old, he was soon joined by 30-year-old Brazilian runner Robson De Oliveira, who had also been on pace for his fastest marathon. Together, the two athletes linked arms around Haridasse and, in a remarkable display of determination and compassion, carried him across the finish line.
All three men were immediately attended to by paramedics, with De Oliveira himself collapsing shortly after finishing due to the exertion. The Bangor local Beggs remained with the two men, ensuring both athletes received the care they needed.
The moment has since gone viral, with footage shared widely across social media, amassing more than two million views on X alone.
The trio’s official finish times, De Oliveira in 2:44:26, Haridasse in 2:44:32 and Beggs in 2:44:36, reflect not just their athletic performance, but the selfless spirit shown in the closing moments of an unforgettable race. Beggs placed 1,884th overall out of almost 30,000 participants with an average pace of 6 minutes and 17 seconds per mile.
In a race defined by resilience and personal achievement, this powerful act of sportsmanship serves as a reminder of what athletics is truly about.
