Scullion and Hughes Break Records in Larne

In windy conditions, just over 60 athletes took to the streets of Larne to take part in the P&O Antrim Coast Half Marathon, in a race which saw 4-time Olympic Gold Medallist, Sir Mo Farah attempt to beat his own British record.

It was an early start for the athletes, as they toed the start line on Saturday morning with Olympian Mo Farah, including Strive Running Club’s Tommy Hughes and Under Armour athlete, Stephen Scullion.

Sir Mo led the race from the start, and finished in 60mins, 31secs which is his 4th fastest time and the 3rd fastest on the UK All Time List. Due to his fast-pace setting, the next 11 athletes after him all gained PBs, including Northern Ireland’ Stephen Scullion, who finished in 4th place in a time of 01:01:08, which breaks the NI Half Marathon record of 01:02:09, previously set by Paul Pollock in 2014. Commonwealth Games athlete, Kevin Seaward finished in 5th place in a time of 01:03:05, beating his PB by 2 minutes.

Strive Running Club’s Tommy Hughes broke the World Age Group record for 60 years, finishing in a time of 01:11:09, beating the previous record, set by British athlete, Martin Rees in 2013, by 22 seconds.

There was also a strong NI & Ulster team of Chris Madden, Aaron McGrady, Conan McCaughey, Declan Reed and Scott Rankin. First from the NI team was Chris Madden, who finished in a time of 01:06:01, followed by Conan McCaughey in a time of 01:06:38. Declan Reed finished in a time of 01:07:36, with Scott Rankin behind in a time of 01:09:25 and Aaron McGrady in a time of 01:11:46.

The Women’s race saw NI’s Jessica Craig finishing in a PB time of 01:15:45, leading the ladies team. North Belfast Harrier’s Gladys Ganiel finished in a time of 01:18:12, followed by NI’s Ciara Toner in 01:18:28 and Catherine Whoriskey in 01:20:14. Next for the Ladies team was Sarah Lavery in a time of 01:23:26.
