Seven NI & Ulster Athletes Compete at Valence EAP Meet

Seven athletes from Northern Ireland and Ulster represented their country at the Valence EAP Meet, France on Saturday 1st June 2019.

The athletes all performed well, with Keith Marks (Clonliffe Harriers/ John Shields) taking home the gold in the Long Jump with a season’s best of 7.38m (w/s 2.5). City of Lisburn AC’s Josh Armstrong (Jerzy Macieuwicz) claimed silver in the 110m Hurdles with a PB time of 15.20.

Mollie Courtney (Cheltenham AC/ James Hillier) came 4th in the 100m Hurdles in a time of 13.81s, while Ben Fisher (City of Lisburn AC/ Femi Akinsanya) came 4th in the Long Jump with a season’s best of 7.18m (/s 0.3).

Ballymena & Antrim’s Lydia Mills (Alan Kennedy) took 5th place in the Long Jump, with a distance of 5.64m, while Caitlin Maguire (North Belfast Harriers/ Alan Kennedy) took 5th in the 100m in a time of 12.47. In the Men’s 400m Hurdles, Paul Sexton (Annalee AC/ Robert Murphy) came 7th in a time of 56.11.

Others athletes competing at the event from Northern Ireland and Ulster included, 2014 Commonwealth Athlete, Jason Harvey who came 3rd in the 400m Hurdles in a time of 51.98s and Holly Mulholland (City of Lisburn AC/ Sue Mulholland), the 2018 Irish Schools 80m Hurdles Champion, who came 8th in her event with a PB time of 14.65.

Elsewhere this weekend…

2018 Commonwealth Games athlete, Jack Agnew (Torque Racing Club) competed at the Daniela Jutzeler Memorial Meet in Arbon, Switzerland on 30th May 2019. He competed in a number of events including the 800m T54 event, gaining a new PB time of 1.38.47, finishing in 24th place overall. He then went on to the 400m Male T54 event, finishing in 28th place overall in a time of 51.76 and the 1500m T54 event, finishing in 32nd place in a time of 3.08.84.

Continuing his weekend, Jack competed in the Arbon Track Meet on Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd June 2019. He competed in the 400m event, finishing in 54th place in a time of 51.10 and in the 1500m event with a time of 3.13.06 to take 43rd place. Jack earned a new PB time of 26.53 in the 200m event, finishing in 20th place before competing in the 800m event, where he came 41st overall in a time of 1.38.89.

 

Local athletes took part in the Walled City Marathon in Derry on Sunday 2nd June 2019. Last year's Belfast City Marathon winner Eric Koech (Kenya) made light work of the opposition to take victory by some 7 minutes in what was for him the relatively modest time of 2 hrs 34 mins 19 secs. Eric who won this race in 2016 was never troubled and had a 3 mins lead at the halfway mark.

Chris McGuinness (Foyle Valley AC) was happy with his second place performance in a new PB of 2.40.20, while Rosses AC’s Shane O' Donnell was 3rd in 2.42.51.

The Ladies race was won by Armagh AC's Natalie Hall in 3hrs 3 mins 35 secs, with Donore AC's Grace Kennedy in 2nd in 3.04.32, followed by Ashling Murray (Carmen Runners) who ran a PB of 3.04.51.
