WEEKEND ROUND UP 10-11TH OF JANUARY
12 January 2026

Two NI records fell in Valencia on Sunday morning in what was billed as the fastest 10k in the world.
In a race which saw two European records and numerous national records set, Hannah Irwin (Gavin Pavey, Cambridge and Coleridge AC) and Callum Morgan (Mark Kirk, CNDR) both broke NI 10k records. Hannah took fourteen seconds off her previous record, set a couple of weeks ago in Telford, running 31.28.
Callum took fifteen seconds off the previous record, which was held by Terry Greene for thirty-eight years. His time of 28.04 was also inside the B standard for the European Championships and well within the standard for the European Cup.
Both athletes look to be well on course for achieving the consideration standard for the 10000m at this year’s Commonwealth Games, which will be held in August. Callum has already achieved the 5000m consideration standard.
Closer to home there were also some good performances.
2022 Commonwealth Games Heptathlon representative Anna McCauley (Adam McMullen, City of Lisburn AC) started the 2026 Commonwealth year with a bang at the Northern Indoor Championships in Sheffield. Anna, who set two Heptathlon PBs and Games Nomination Standards in 2025, set an outright Long Jump PB of 5.98m and then, followed up with her second fastest 60m Hurdles ever with 8.63. The City of Lisburn AC athlete will be back in Sheffield next weekend for the England Combined Events Championships, where she will be a contender for the Pentathlon title.
British Futures Para T12 sprinter Freddie Wallace (Michelle Rea, City of Lisburn AC), in his first race with new guider runner Harvey King, ran a 60m PB of 7.78 at the Loughborough Indoor Open. The pair went even faster in their second race but unfortunately suffered a disqualification. This will have been good preparation for the World Para Athletics Grand Prix taking place in Dubai next month, where Freddie will be running over 100m and trying to improve his Commonwealth Ranking towards Glasgow 2026.
