WEEKEND ROUND UP  14th and 15th February

There was plenty of action indoors, outdoors, on the road and in the cross-country this weekend.

At the BUCS Indoor Championships in Sheffield, Rachel McCann (North Down AC) dropped down in distance to finish third in the women’s 200m final in a time of 24.00 and in the women’s 400m final, Jenna Breen finished fourth in 55.10. At the Boston University Valentines Meeting, Jack O’Farrell (Newry AC) became the fourth Northern Irish man to dip under the previous indoor 5000m record of 13.45 this year, running a big PB of 13.43.79, finishing eighteenth overall. At the Sound Invite in North Carolina, James Gormley (Carmen Runners) paced the world indoor mile record attempt, which saw Olympic Champion Cole Hocker break the American record with 3.45.94.

In Dubai at the World Para Grand Prix, Freddie Wallace (City of Lisburn AC) set a fantastic new PB of 11.86 in the T12 men’s 100m, assisted by his guide runner Harvey King (Strabane AC). Eve Walsh Dann (North Down AC) won silver in the T38 long jump, with a jump of 3.71m, also competing in the 100m and the 200m, recording 15.23 and 31.35 respectively.

Eoghan Totten (Newcastle AC) was the best of the locals competing in the Barcelona Half Marathon, running 65.16 to finish seventy- seventh overall.

Conan McCaughey (North Belfast Harriers) continued his recent good form over the cross-country, finishing second in the Irish Masters Cross-Country Championships which were held in Abbottstown on Sunday. He also led his North Belfast Harriers team to overall victory in the men’s team race. Closer to home at the NICS cross-country races in Stormont, Emily Morris (Willowfield Harriers) won the women’s race with Craig McMeechan winning the men’s race.
