The Mary Peters Track in Belfast hosted this year’s SIAB Track and Field Championships which saw the best U18 athletes from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales compete. Ten Ulster Schools athletes competed for Ireland and came away with five Individual medals.
Grace Evans (St Patricks Maghera) ran the race of her life to finish second in the girl’s 800m in a pb of 2.09.25, she was closely followed by Madison Welby (Friends School Lisburn) who finished third in 2.10.29. Grace also added a bronze medal to her collection as part of Ireland’s girls 4x300m relay team. Ronan Scullion (St Colmans Newry) finished third in the boys 400m hurdles in 57.09. In the girls 80m hurdles Sara Devany (Regent House) was fourth in 11.73. Brendan Ndambrira (St Eunans College) along with Ewan Donald (Regent House) doubled up in the boys 100m and 200m, Brendan running 21.95 in the 200m finished third with Ewan finishing 5th in 22.14. In the boys 100m Brendan narrowly missed out on a medal finishing 4th in 11.06 whilst Ewan ran 11.20 to finish sixth. Both of them also won silver as part of the Irish 4x100m relay team.
In the field Sam Grossmith (Wallace High School) competed in the Javelin and the discus and was rewarded with third place in the discus with a throw of 42.46m and fifth in the javelin with 44.73m. Cabrini Pyne (Deele College) finished third in the girl’s javelin with a throw of 38.75m. Emma Reid (Glenola College) was fourth in the girl’s discus with 36.18m. Isabella O’Dowd (Victoria College) jumped 1.61m to finish sixth in the girls high jump.
At the European U18 Championships in Rieti Italy Ethan Carr (Ballymena and Antrim) ran 48.89 in his 400m heat to progress to the semi- finals, running in semi-final Ethan finished seventh in 48.76.
In Heusden-Zolder Belgium Zoe Toland (CNDR) improved her 1500m pb by almost two seconds running 4.10.82 to finish fourth in the women’s B race.
Earlier in the week at the Lucerne Silver Label meeting Lauren Roy (Fast Twitch Athletics) finished 7th in the women’s 100m in 11.41, she was also part of the Irish women’s 4x100m team that ran a season’s best of 43.89 to finish third. Callum Morgan (CNDR) was fifth in a tactical men’s 3000m in 7.55.72.
Stephen McAuley won the National 10-mile Road Championships, held in Phoenix Park on Sunday, clocking 50.01.
Nick Griggs (CNDR) competing in the Gyulai Istvan Memorial Meeting Budapest finished eighth in the men’s 3000m in a season’s best of 7.38.16.
