WEEKEND ROUND UP 20th & 21st June

Many of our top age group athletes competed this weekend at the Tailteann Games in Carlow. This is one of the oldest events on the athletics calendar and serves as a trial for selection to the SIABS athletics International which will be held in Belfast on the 18th of July.

Ethan Carr continued his excellent run of form by winning the boys 400m in a pb of 48.43, Ewan Donald and Brendan Ndambira renewed their rivalry in the sprints. Ewan won the 200m in a pb of 21.81 with Brendan second in a pb of 21.93, Brendan then finished second in the 100m 11.07 with Ewan third in 11.18 which was also a pb for him. Grace Evans also doubled up winning the girl’s 800m in 2.11.76 from Madison Welby then finished fifth in the 300m in 41.84. Owen Acheson finished third in the boys 3000m in a pb of 8.58.27.

In the field events Tara Laverty won the discus with a throw of 45.33 then finished third in the Shot with a putt of 13.09. Emma Reid was third in the discus with 35.09m. Cabrina Pyne won the girls javelin with a throw of 37.83m. Joseph Ike finished third in the high jump with 1.85m which equalled his pb then also finished third in the shot with a putt of 13.98 which was an outright pb for him. In the boy’s discus Sam Grossmith finished second with a throw of 42.13m he also finished third in the javelin with a pb of 49.25m. Isabella O’Dowd finished joint first in the girl’s high jump with a jump of 1.65m.

In Continental Europe hot humid weather prevailed over the weekend bringing difficult conditions for our endurance athletes. In Vienna on Saturday Callum Morgan (CNDR) finished sixth in the men’s 5000m in 13.30.12 which was a season’s best for him. On Sunday in the FBK Continental Gold Metting in Hengelo Nick Griggs finished an excellent fourth place in 13.19.01.

In the US Roisin Flanagan was racing in the Portland Track Festival 5000m and finished third in 15.45.76.

At the British Championships in Birmingham Hannah Irwin finished 7th in the women’s 5000m final in 15.52.66
