Local athletes continued to impress both at home and abroad last weekend, with standout performances across a range of track and field events.

Callum Morgan (CNDR) and Nick Griggs (CNDR) continued their good run of form in Belgium. Competing in the Meeting Voor Mon in Leuven Callum finished third in the C race in a new pb of 3.39.21. The A 1500m proved to be a tactical affair and Nick finished 6th in a season’s best of 3.37.67.

Closer to home in Birmingham there were several of our local athletes competing for Harrow in the final deciding round of the National League. Andrew Milligan (NBH) won the A 1500m with Neil Johnston (Annadale Striders) winning the B section. In the women’s 1500m Kirsti Foster (Willowfield) won the B section. In the men’s 3000m Luke Dinsmore (Annadale) was third in the A race whilst Catherine O’Connor (East Down) finished second in the A section. Rachel McCann (North Down) was second in the women’s A 400m in 53.79 and part of Harrow’s winning 4x400m squad. Harrow were also crowned British National League Premiership winners for the first time in their history.

At the Northern Ireland Combined Event Championships at the Mary Peters Track there were two days of great weather and close competitions throughout the age groups and up to masters. Multiple 2025 major championships medallist and record breaker Kate O’Connor used the conditions to good effect for some competition preparation ahead of next month’s World Championships in Tokyo. The recently crowned World University Games champion started the 100m Hurdles and High Jump events before winning the Shot Put in a very respectable 13.87m.

In the Senior Men’s event Ronan Bloomer (Mid Ulster AC) had a very strong second day, setting several PB’s including 110m Hurdles, Javelin and a new Pole Vault best of 3.80m to score an overall PB of 5516 points. There was a particularly close finish in U15 girls’ competition which came down to the 800m with Rebekah Abbott (Lagan Valley) eventually coming out the winner just 3 points ahead of guest competitor Ruby Cunnane.

There were many strong performances in the age groups and the various groups in the masters with several excellent individual events including Isabella O’Dowd ( Lagan Valley 1.66m HJ) and Cabrini Pyne (Lifford Strabane 36.36m Javelin) in the U17 Heptathlon and Dominik Lipowski (North Down AC 37.15m Discus) in the U17 Men’s Octathlon.
