WEEKEND ROUND UP - 4th & 5th July

The National U20/23 Championships were held over the weekend in Tullamore and produced another medal haul for our young athletes. It was the field events that brought most successes with three gold’s four silvers and three bronzes.

Curtis Ford (Lagan Valley AC) continued his remarkable season with a dominant win in the U20 men's javelin, throwing a PB of 62.31m, almost fifteen metres ahead of second place. Carys Carlisle (Ballymena and Antrim AC) finished third in the U20 women's javelin with a throw of 41.68m.

Caoimhe Gallen (Lifford Strabane AC) added the U20 women's hammer title to her recent Irish Schools title, winning with a throw of 52.83m; she also finished second in the shot put with 12.13m. Her older sister Adrienne finished second in the U23 women's hammer with a throw of 53.29m. Their clubmate Cole Spencer added to the club's impressive medal tally, finishing second in the U20 men's weight for distance with a throw of 7.16m. Aida Zukauskaite (Lagan Valley AC) finished third in the U20 women's hammer with 45.88m.

Charlie Lawden (North Down AC) and Jason Craig (Lagan Valley AC) finished second and third in the U23 men's javelin, with throws of 47.20m and 44.68m respectively. Harvey King (City of Lisburn AC) was our sole medal winner in the jumps, taking the U23 men's long jump with a leap of 6.76m.

On the track, Adam Courtney (Ballymena and Antrim AC) won the U23 men's 400m hurdles in 54.44. In the U20 men's 110m hurdles, Cameron McCracken (North Down AC) finished second in 14.67. The Foster sisters, Kirsti and Lucy (CNDR), finished second and third in the U23 women's 1500m, and Oisín McGloin (Lagan Valley AC) finished third in the U23 men's 5000m in 14:58.20. Joshua Aduwoola (Fast Twitch Athletics) finished second in the U20 men's 100m in 10.86.

Elsewhere, at the Pursuit 5000m races in Stirling, Scotland, on Saturday evening, Luke Kelly (CNDR) dipped under fourteen minutes for 5k for the first time, running 13:54.37 for sixth place in the elite men's race. Niamh Carr (DCH) dropped down in distance to the 800m and was rewarded with a PB of 2:04.03, finishing third in the elite women's 800m race.
