Cold breezy conditions greeted the four hundred athletes who made the trip to the Coleraine Campus 5k hosted by Springwell Running Club.
This event also incorporated the NI and Ulster 5k road Championships with places on the NI and Ulster team for the Home Nations 5k on the line for the first two finishers in the men’s and women’s elite races.
The women’s race was won by Annadale Striders Hannah Gilliland in 16.39 from seventeen-year-old Emer McKee (CNDR) who ran 17.09, Lagan Valley’s Catherine Martin secured third place with a time of 17.23. Annadale Striders won the team race from Lagan Valley with Ballymena and Antrim AC in third.
The men’s race was a much closer affair with five men still in contention with one k to go. It was former Commonwealth Games athlete Danny Mooney (Letterkenny AC) who hit the front with four hundred metres to go, and he held on for the win in 14.35 from Annadale’s Neil Johnston who ran 14.37. Oisin McGloin (Lagan Valley AC) completed the podium finishing third in 14.40 which was a pb for him. Oisin led his Lagan Valley team to victory in the team race with Letterkenny and Annadale Striders tied for second place.
There was more action on the roads on Sunday with the Storming the Castle 10k in Carrickfergus.
In the10k Kieren Kelly (Raheny Shamrocks) took the win in 32.13 with Gemma Turley (Ballycastle Runners AC) taking the women’s race in a new course record of 37.48.
