WEEKEND ROUNDUP 2ND & 3RD MAY 2026

Patrick McColl (2nd NI & Ulster Man Home in Belfast City Marathon 2026)

Thousands of runners filled the streets of Belfast on Sunday as the city hosted its annual marathon, drawing a strong field and enthusiastic crowds for one of the highlight events on the local athletics calendar.

Leading the way among NI and Ulster athletes was John Joe Doherty of Finn Valley AC, whose impressive time of 2:26:59 secured him ninth place overall. Close behind, Patrick McColl of Roadrunners AC crossed the line in tenth, while David Stewart of Ballymena Runners claimed eleventh, completing the podium positions for the NI and Ulster Marathon Championships.

The women’s race delivered a standout performance from Judith Storm of City of Derry Spartans, who produced a remarkable run to finish second overall. Storm slashed more than eight minutes off her previous personal best, clocking 2:39:09 to comfortably take the NI and Ulster Championship title. Her commanding performance left her nearly five minutes clear of Annadale Striders’ Dearbhla Cox, who finished fourth overall and secured second place in the championships. Pamela Kirk of Roadrunners AC added to her club’s success by taking third in the NI and Ulster standings.

In the wheelchair race, Jayne Bleakley claimed victory with an excellent time of 2:32, adding another notable performance to the day’s results.

Away from the roads, it was a quieter weekend on the track and field circuit, though Lucy McGlynn of Tir Chonaill AC ensured there was still plenty to celebrate. Competing at the BUCS Championships in Cardiff, McGlynn delivered the performance of the weekend in the women’s 400m hurdles. She won her heat with a personal best before lowering it again in the final, clocking 59.93 to claim an excellent third-place finish.

Further afield in Canada, Roisin Flanagan showcased her continued strong form at the Ottawa Fastest Women’s 5K, finishing fourth in a time of 16:07.

Overall, it was a weekend marked by standout individual achievements and encouraging performances, underlining the strength and depth of local athletics both at home and on the international stage.
