WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS SELECTIONS
29 August 2025

Four of our local athletes, including three Athletics NI Academy graduates, have secured selection for next months Athletics World Championships which will be held in Tokyo next month.
European and World indoor medallist and World Student Games champion Kate O’Connor (Dundalk St Gerards) has been selected for the women’s heptathlon and will go into the competition full of confidence following her breakthrough season. She is currently the highest ranked Irish athlete going into the championships with ninth place.
Rachel McCann (North Down), Jenna Breen (COLAC) and Conor Kelly (Finn Valley) have been selected for the mixed 4x400 relay and the women’s 4x400. It is a poignant selection for Jenna as her former coach Jo Savage sadly passed away suddenly earlier this year. Conor Kelly has been in great form this summer breaking the Irish U20 400m record when winning the Gold at the European U20 Championships three weeks ago. Rachel has been rewarded following her brilliant silver medal winning performance at the Irish Championships in a pb of 53.19.
*Nick Griggs (CNDR) has been provisionally named for both the 1500m and the 5000m but is subject to confirmation from World Athletics and given his current ranking position is unlikely to receive an invite.
