WORLD INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP SELECTION SUCCESS 2026

The announcement confirms athletes with Athletics Ireland ‘A’ standards, while athletes who have achieved the Athletics Ireland ‘B’ Standard will be confirmed when World Athletics releases its final list of qualifiers on March 11th.

Kate O’Connor (Dundalk St Gerards AC) will be hoping to go one better than her fantastic silver medal from last year as she competes in the women’s pentathlon. She made history in Nanjing, China in 2025 by winning Ireland’s first World Indoor Championship medal since 2006 at only 24 years old.

Mark English (Finn Valley AC) has been selected for the Men’s 800m race after another year of success. The Donegal native ran 1:44.23 at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting earlier in the year and also ran an Irish Indoor 600M record in January at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena in Dublin.

Following a groundbreaking year for Nick Griggs (CNDR TC), he has been selected for the men’s 3000m. This follows his National Championships victory last weekend and his record breaking run at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in January.

Lauren Roy (Fast Twitch AC) has been selected for the 60m race following a breakthrough season in America for Tarleton State University on the NCAA collegiate circuit. Her selection follows her recent NI Indoor 60m record break of 7.19, moving her to equal second place on the Irish all-time Women’s 60m list.

James Gormley (Carmen Runners) has also been named provisionally for the 1500m after his remarkable season in which he broke the NI Indoor mile record. He achieved the Athletics Ireland ‘B’ Standard, but his selection is pending confirmation by World Athletics.

World Athletics are set to publish the final list of qualifiers on March 11th.
