Weekend Review U20 & U23 Athletes Shine in Ireland and England

There were Commonwealth Games standards for Eilish Flanagan and Dempsey McGuigan while Northern Ireland’s U20 and U23 athletes competed at the Athletics Ireland U20 & U23 Championships in Morton Stadium and the England Athletics U20 & U23 Championships in Bedford this weekend.

Scottish Athletics Invitational Hammer

Finn Valley AC’s Dempsey McGuigan set a new best of 72.32m in the Men’s Hammer event at the Scottish Athletics Invitational Hammer in Aberdeen setting his fourth Commonwealth Games 2022 standard this year.

World Athletics Continental Tour, Madrid

Eilish Flanagan (Carmen Runners/ Adams State University) competed at the World Athletics Continental Tour, Silver Meet in Madrid, securing her second Commonwealth Games 2022 standard this year in the Women’s 3000m Steeplechase, finishing in 5th place in a time of 9:48.88.

Athletics Ireland U20 & U23 Championships

Finn Valley AC’s James Kelly set a new Championship Record in the U23 Men’s Shot Put with a throw of 16.90m to take 1st place, while Lifford Strabane AC’s Gareth Crawford also set a new Championship Record in the U23 Men’s Javelin with a throw of 65.13m to take 1st place. North Down AC’s Rachel McCann finished 1st in the U23 Women’s 400m in a time of 56.58, before competing as part of ‘Team Ireland’ in the 4x400m Relays, finishing in 1st place in 3:48.89, alongside Miriam Daly; Arlene Crossan and Laura Crossan.

Inny Vale AC’s Casey Muley won the U20 Women’s Discus with a throw of 44.43m and the U20 Women’s Shot with a throw of 14.08m. Orangegrove AC’s Adam Sykes finished the U20 Men’s 100m in 2nd place in a significant PB time of 10.71, before joining ‘Team Ireland’ in the 4x100m Relay, finishing in 1st place in 41.50, alongside Cillian Griffin; Robert McDonnell and Israel Olatunde. Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Callum Baird took 1st place in the U20 Men’s 400m in a time of 50.38 and City of Derry Spartans’ Eimear Kelly took 1st place in the U20 Women’s 100m Hurdles in a time of 14.67.

In the 1500m, U20 athlete Rebecca Rossiter (Loughview AC) came 2nd in 4:35.15, while Mid Ulster AC’s Nick Griggs finished 2nd in 3:53.54 in the U20 Men’s event. City of Lisburn AC’s Katie Monteith finished in 2nd place in the U20 Women’s 100m in a time of 12.06, while club mate, Jordan Cunningham finished 2nd in the U20 Men’s 110m Hurdles in a time of 14.34; North Belfast Harriers’ Caitlin Maguire finishing 3rd in the U23 Women’s 100m in 12.20 and Lagan Valley AC’s Aoife McGreevy finished in 2nd place in the U20 Women’s 5000m in a time of 17:02.41. Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Jonathan Cochrane jumped 6.70m in the U20 Men’s Long Jump to take 2nd place; City of Lisburn AC’s Joshua Knox jumped 12.93 in the U20 Men’s Triple Jump to take 3rd place and Orangegrove AC’s Anna McKinty finished in 3rd place in the U20 Women’s Triple Jump, clearing 10.93m.

England Athletics U20 & U23 Championships

Finn Valley AC’s Sommer Lecky took 1st place in the U23 Women’s High Jump, clearing 1.73m and City of Lisburn AC’s Ellie McCartney (Woodford Green AC) took 2nd place in the U23 Women’s Pole Vault event, clearing 4.00m. Lagan Valley AC’s Jai Benson (Liverpool Harriers & AC) jumped 13.99m (w/s 0.6) in the U23 Men’s Triple Jump to take 4th place.

Youth Academy athlete, Dylan McBride (City of Lisburn AC) finished in 6th place in the U20 Men’s 800m final in a time of 1:53.49, while club mate, Jenna Breen finished the U20 Women’s 800m final in a time of 57.87.
