Weekend Round Up- Belfast Irish Milers, U23 England Championships and DNA in Minsk

Northern Ireland and Ulster’s athletes took advantage of the brief summer sunshine on Saturday 22nd June to compete at the Belfast Irish Milers Meet, with a host of new PBs and two records broken. Gareth Hill (Ballymena & Antrim) broke his own NI M40 record from the NI & Ulster Senior Championships, in the 1500m with a time of 4:01.24.

Northern Ireland’s Half Marathon record holder, Ann Marie McGlynn (Letterkenny AC) led a classy field in the Women’s 5k event, finishing in a time of 16:09.35, just behind her PB time of 16:07.60. Following in 2nd place was Aoibhe Richardson (Kilkenny City Harriers) in 16:23.61 and Emma Mitchell (Team Nike) in 3rd place in 16:40.37.

The Women’s 1500m was won by Carmen AC’s Eilish Flanagan in a new PB time of 4:21.06s, ahead of North Down AC’s Rachel Gibson who also gained a new PB time of 4:23.89. Anne Gilshinin (Slaney) broke the World Record for a W55 in the 1500m, with a time of 4:41.46.

Ballymena Runners’ James Hamilton took gold in the Men’s 1500m C event, in a time of 4:05.58, with Olympian AC’s Sean McGinley in 3rd place in a time of 4:07.18.

Glaslough Harriers’ Conor Duffy came 2nd in the 5k Men’s A race, in a time of 14.40.43, behind Liam Brady (Tullamore Harriers) in a time of 14.03.28. Gerard Heaney (Acorns AC) won the Men’s 5k B race in a time of 15:38.59, with Eoin Hughes (Letterkenny AC) hot on his heels in 15:47.85.

In the 1500m A and B events, the A race saw Conor Bradley (City of Derry Spartans) in 8th place in a time of 3:48.18, with North Down AC’s Craig McMeechan in 16th position in a time of 3:55.44. The B race had City of Lisburn AC’s Jonathan Whan in 2nd place in a time of 3:55.25, with Andrew Milligan (North Belfast Harriers) in 6th place in a time of 3:56.33.

U23 England Champs

Ellie McCartney (Woodford Green AC) came 2nd in the U23 Women’s Pole Vault competition with a jump of 4.00m taking the Irish outdoor U23 record.

 

Nivelles EAP 

Two athletes from Northern Ireland & Ulster travelled to compete at the Nivelles EAP Meet on Saturday 22nd June 2019. Ronald Surlis (Annalee AC) competed in the 800m, finishing in 7th place in a time of 1:54.18 and Niamh Malone (Monaghan Phoenix) competed in the 400m Hurdles finishing 3rd in her race in a time of 1:02.29.

 

Dynamic New Athletics Meet in Minsk

On Monday 25th June 2019 the 4x400m Mixed Relay team of Andrew Mellon, Sinead Denny, Kelly McGrory and Luke Lennon Ford won their race in a new National Record time of 3:24.14, to add 12 points to the team total, which moves Ireland up to 4th place, only 2 points behind 2nd place.
