Hot sunny conditions over the weekend led to some good performances from our local athletes over the weekend.
In Phoenix Park Dublin the Irish 5k Road Running Championships were held with Hannah Gilliland (Annadale Striders) and James Gormley (Carmen Runners) both winning the individual national titles. Hannah ran 16.17 to win by twenty-three seconds and James 13.59 to win by nineteen seconds.
On the track in Tullamore Athletics Ireland held their May Open event and Cameron McCracken (North Down) won the U18 110 hurdles event in a PB of 14.08 (1.0) which beats Garbhan McKenna’s NI U18 record of 14.18 from 2013.
Further afield in the US Lauren Roy (Ballymena and Antrim) improved her 100m pb to 11.43 when finishing second in both sprint events at her Conference Championship while Dylan McBride (Willowfield) also improved his 800m pb running 1.50.90. At the Big East Championships Cara Laverty running for Providence was 3rd in the women’s 1500m in a time of 4.18.70. Anna Gardner running in the women’s 5000m finished 7th in a pb of 16.17.63 which was under Ireland’s B standard for the European U20 Championships.
