Welcome Return for the NI & Ulster U18-U20 & Senior Championships

Athletics NI would encourage all to enjoy the weekend’s action from the comfort of their own sofa, as social distancing measures will be in place and we would discourage spectators. Live streaming of the events will be available, and the links are below.

Friday Events

The Championships will start on Friday 11^th September with the IPC events where Torque Racing Club’s Andrew Greer will take on Sean McCullagh (Le Cheile) and Cillian Dunn (Borrisokane AC) in the 100m and 1500m Wheelchair events.

The next events will be the Senior Men’s & Women’s 400m Hurdles, followed by the 1500m events. Once again there is a huge interest in the 1500m across all age groups from U14 to Senior Men and Women, with a total of 162 athletes taking part.

Saturday Track Events

Saturday’s events will start at 10am with the Mixed 3000m final, which will see Omagh Harriers’ Sorcha Mullan (U18G) run against Ballymena Runners’ Zara Surgenor (U20G) as well as Finn Valley AC’s Sean McGinley (U18B), St Malachy’s AC’s Callum Morgan (U18B) and Armagh AC’s Matthew Lavery (U18B).

City of Lisburn AC’s Katie Monteith (U18G) and Lauren Roy (Sen) will go head to head in the Women’s 100m sprints, against 2017 IPC World Junior Champion and North Down AC athlete, Eve Walsh- Dann (U20G).

Paralympian and NI 100m Record holder, Jason Smyth (Derry Track Club) will compete in the Men’s 100m against Irish Senior 60m Champion, Dean Adams (Ballymena & Antrim AC) and upcoming U18 athlete, Oliver Swinney (Speed Development Project Track Club).

Next will be the 400m heats with North Down AC’s Rachel McCann and City of Lisburn AC’s Victoria Lightbody vying for the spots in the Women’s final, against 2019 U18 Champion Daniella Jansen (Finn Valley AC). In the Men’s heats will be North Down AC’s Louis Albrow, St Colman’s College, Newry’s Conor O’Carroll and Willowfield Harrier’s Ryan Henry.

City of Lisburn AC’s Holly Diamond will take on the 2000m Steeplechase, before the Women’s 200m heats which will see Jenna Breen (City of Lisburn AC), Molly Curran (Carmen Runners), Rachel McCann (North Down AC), Lauren Roy (City of Lisburn Ac) and Niamh Malone (Monaghan Phoenix AC) all compete in their respective heats.

The 200m Men’s event will see Orangegrove AC’s Adam Sykes and Aaron McCord compete against Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Jonathan Carleton and Callum Baird. While in the 3000m Walk, Glaslough Harriers’ Ava Ross will compete in the U18 Girls, while Tir Chonaill AC’s Siobhan Doherty will compete in the U20 Girls event.

Olympian, Kerry O’Flaherty (Newcastle & District AC) will take to the start line in the Women’s 5000m event, along with NI 3000m Record Holder & Mid Ulster AC’s Grace Carson, and Letterkenny AC’s Nakita Burke.

The Women’s 800m events will have City of Lisburn AC’s Kelly Neely, North Down AC’s Rachel Gibson, Ulster University’s Katie Kirk (now Foster); and Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Niamh Carr. In the U18 & U19 Girls 800m, City of Derry Spartans’ Aela Stewart will battle against Finn Valley Ac’s Daniella Jansen and North Down AC’s Murphy Miller. City of Lisburn AC’s Dylan McBride will compete against 3 Ways AC’s Ultan O’Callaghan for the U18 Men’s 800m, while Niall McKnight (Annadale Striders) and Matthew Willis (Lagan Valley AC) compete in the U19 & U20 Men’s event.

Annadale Striders’ Conall Kirk will take to the track in the Senior Men’s 800m along with North Belfast Harrier’s Andrew Milligan, before the Men’s 3000m Steeplechase event with Armagh AC’s Joseph Haynes and Loughview AC’s Ethan Dunn.

City of Lisburn AC’s Anna McIlmoyle will compete in the Women’s 100m Hurdles along with Tir Chonaill AC’s Niamh Moohan and Annalee Ac’s Bevan McCaffrey. In the Men’s 110m Hurdles, Omagh Harrier’s Trevor McGlynn will compete against City of Lisburn AC’s Jordan Cunningham.

The final track events on the Championships will be the Men’s 5000m, with a total of 40 athletes competing across 2 heats, including North Belfast Harriers’ Mark McKinstry, North Down AC’s Craig McMeechan, Annadale Striders’ Neil Johnston and City of Lisburn AC’s James Edgar.

Saturday Field Events

The field events will begin with the Women’s Discus with Lifford Strabane AC’s Adrienne Gallen (Sen) and the 2019 Senior Women’s Discus Champion & North Down AC athlete, Amy Kimber (U20G). Gallen will also compete in the Women’s Hammer later in the day, against Shercock AC’s Aine Corbally and Lagan Valley AC’s Lynsey Glover.

In the Men’s Shot, Lifford Strabane AC’s Ross Henderson (U18B), will compete against teammate Damian Crawford (Sen), Tir Chonaill AC’s Shane Breslin and Parasport NI’s Dougie Durrant and Ryan Meeke. Henderson and Crawford will return to the field in the Men’s Discus event, against Tir Chonaill AC’s Aaron Bradshaw and Jonny McGonagle.

The Women’s Long Jump will see Lagan Valley AC’s Kate Lenny (U19G), Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Jana McQuillan (U18G) and Tir Chonaill AC’s Niamh Moohan (Sen) against Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Lydia Mills (Sen) and City of Lisburn AC’s Erin Fisher (U20G).

Carmen AC’s Molly Curran (U18G) will compete in the Women’s Shot against Innyvale AC’s Casey Mulvey (U18G) and Annalee Ac’s Niamh McCorry.

Lagan Valley AC’s Jai Benson will hope to retain his title in the Men’s Triple Jump event, against last year’s silver medallist, Mark Burton (QUB AC) and Tir Chonaill AC’s Caolan O’Callaghan. Benson and O’Callaghan will also compete in the Men’s Long Jump against Commonwealth Athlete, Adam McMullen (Crusaders AC), Clonliffe Harrier’s Keith Marks McCabe and Ulster University’s Alan Kennedy.

NI U18 Pole Vault Record Holder, Ellie McCartney (City of Lisburn AC) will compete in the Women’s Pole Vault event against Ballymena & Antrim AC’s Abbie O’Neill and last year’s Champion, Erin Fisher (City of Lisburn AC). In the Men’s Pole Vault event, multi-eventer Troy McConville (AthleticsNI Unattached) will jump against Liverpool Harriers & AC’s Peter Glass and Tir Chonaill AC’s Fintan Dewhirst.

2018 World Junior Silver Medalist, Sommer Lecky (Finn Valley AC) will compete in the Women’s High Jump event, against Lifford Strabane AC’s Shannon Craig and City of Lisburn AC’s Anna McIlmoyle.

Olympian Youth & AC’s Sarah Crawford and Rachel Carlin will compete in the Women’s Javelin competition along with City of Lisburn Ac’s Sasha Barrett-Ferris and Blackrock AC’s Aoibhin McMahon.

Next on the field will be the Women’s Triple Jump event, which will see Orangegrove AC’s Anna McKinty (Sen) jump against Finn Valley AC’s Micheala Byrne and Lagan Valley AC’s Kate Lenny.

Brendan O’Donnell (Lifford Strabane AC) will compete in the Men’s Hammer event with Finn Valley AC’s Bosco Reid and Lifford Strabane AC’s Ross Henderson, Jude McCrossan and Damian Crawford. Crawford will compete again in the Men’s Javelin with Northern Ireland Masters Association’s Ian McClung, City of Lisburn AC’s Finlay Stewart and Lagan Valley AC’s Ethan Williamson.

The Men’s High Jump event will see City of Derry Spartans’ Peter Fryer compete with Omagh Harriers’ Trevor McGlynn and City of Lisburn trio: Adam Hill, Joshua Knox and Daniel Scott.
