Race Walking

Race Walking has its own distinct technique, its own rules, and its own dedicated officials to judge it — spotting the difference between a legal race walk and a runner's stride takes a trained eye, and it's a genuinely interesting discipline to learn. Open to anyone 16 or over interested in learning more about the sport.

Level 1 Race Walking Judge

A three-hour course covering:

  • The technical difference between walking and running — the heart of what you'll be judging
  • The rules of race walking, and what each judge's paddle signal means
  • How to build confidence spotting infringements in real time
  • The procedure for issuing cautions and red cards, and how to record them correctly
  • The purpose of the posting board, and when and how the chief judge disqualifies a competitor
  • What separates a good Race Walking Judge from an average one

Our courses run throughout the year. Wherever possible, we aim to deliver them face-to-face with our Northern Ireland-based tutors. However, where demand is lower, some courses may be delivered online through our colleagues in the other Home Countries.
