Level 1 Track Course

Date: Saturday 25th March

The level 1 Track Official course is an entry level qualification on the Track & Field Officials’ pathway. This practical course will introduce candidates to the key roles, responsibilities and duties of a Track Official, including recording and reporting infringements, knowledge of track markings and judging lane lines and the finish.

Who should go on this course?

Anyone aged 16+ who is interested in officiating the track events, including sprints, relays and distance events.

What will I learn?

  • To work as part of a team of track officials at an athletics meeting and carry out the basic duties of a track judge/umpire.
  • To know the equipment you need to have with you at an athletics meeting to enable you to carry out your duties throughout the meeting.
  • To understand that a track judge/umpire should record what is seen without being influenced by anyone else.
  • To have a basic knowledge of track markings particularly the finishing line (how to judge the finish) and lane lines.
  • To carry out the basic duties such as; judging, lap board and bell, break line, take over judge, hurdle observation, umpiring for observing running out of lane or impeding other athletes and what these involve.

Is there an assessment?

There isn’t an assessment but after the course candidates need to complete at least 4 competition experiences to become licensed. Candidates must have completed the Health & Safety course for Officials as well. 

What do I do after the course?

  1. It is essential you complete an Access NI as part of your licensing.
  2. Ensure there is a passport quality photograph added to your myAthletics profile (head shot on a white background).
  3. Complete a minimum of 4 experiences for Level 1.
  4. Complete the Level 1 Application for Accreditation.

 

Level 1 Field Course

Date: Sunday 26th March

Time: 10am- 3pm

Venue: Mary Peters Track

The Level 1 Field Official course is an entry level qualification on the UK Athletics Track & Field Officials’ pathway.

This practical course will introduce candidates to the key roles, responsibilities and duties of a field official, including how to follow a duty sheet, complete a results card, application of the rules in field events and how to provide a safe environment for athletes to compete.

Who should go on this course?

Anyone aged 16+ who is interested in officiating the field events:

  • Shot (including seated throws for disabled athletes)
  • Discus (including seated throws for disabled athletes)
  • Javelin (including seated throws for disabled athletes)
  • Hammer
  • Club Throw
  • High Jump
  • Long Jump
  • Triple Jump
  • Pole Vault

What will I learn?

  • Follow a duty sheet
  • Be able to list field events and the various roles covered
  • Understand and describe Health and Safety issues in Field Officiating
  • Application of the rules surrounding field officiating
  • Ability to present the result card accurately

Is there an assessment?

There isn’t an assessment but after the course candidates need to complete at least 4 competition experiences to become licensed. The experiences must cover both horizontal and vertical jumps and both shot and long throws. This may require candidates doing more than 4 experiences. Candidates must have completed the Health & Safety course for Officials.

What do I do after the course?

  1. It is essential you complete an Access NI as part of your licensing.
  2. Ensure there is a passport quality photograph saved to your profile in the myAthletics portal (head shot on a white background).
  3. Complete a minimum of 4 experiences for Level 1.
  4. Complete the Level 1 Application for Accreditation.

 

Course Measurer

Date: Sunday 23rd April

On Sunday 23rd April Dene Townend, a Director of the AUKCM (Association of UK Course Measurers) and International Measurer is coming to Belfast to run a course for those interested in becoming qualified Course Measurers. The day will involve an introductory session to explain the how to prepare for measurement, a practical session in setting up a calibration course and a further practical measuring a designated 5K course following which participants will be required to produce a measurement report which will be sent to Dene.

The course is FREE and participants will be able to have the use of a Jones Counter (the vital element in accurate measuring) on the day. All that is required is that you have a bike to put it on.
