Starter/ Starter's Assistant Officials Courses

The Starter and Starter's Assistant qualifications are available for anyone aged 16 or over who is interested in officiating at Track events and has a keen interest in ensuring each race goes off correctly.

Track & Field Officials Pathway

Level 1 Starter/ Starter's Assistant 

Available for anyone 16 years or older who is interested in officiating at Track events with an interest in working with the latest electronic gun and timing equipment, and working closely with athletes on the start line. The course will last around 3 hours and will cover the following topics:

• The key roles and responsibilities of a Race Starter and Starter's Assistant.
• How, when and where to line up athletes before the start.
• How to implement relevant rules of a race start.
• The correct positioning and clarity of starters instructions/signals.

Next Steps

• Gain a minimum of four competition experiences
• Ensure you have uploaded your licence photo to the myAthletics portal (head shot on a white background)  We are currently experiencing technical difficulties resulting in <https://myathletics.englandathletics.org/portal/Members/Login> being down. Our IT team is currently working on identifying the cause of the issue.
• Complete an Access NI check
• Complete the self-taught Safeguarding module
• Complete the self-taught Health and Safety module module (FREE).
• Complete the Level 1 application form and send to officials@athleticsni.org
